Early History of Grand Saline, Tx
Grand Saline means “big salt” and the huge salt deposit located there is a factor in the settlement of the community. Use of the salt prairie found there predates Texas and was a source of salt for the Caddo Indians as early as 900 A.D.
The history of Grand Saline is actually the tale of two cities. The original settlement established in 1845 was known a Jordan's Saline and was located about a mile southeast of the present town site on the Dallas-Shreveport Road. Primitive salt works, owned by John Jordan and A.T. McGee, were set up on the prairie to produce evaporated salt and a community grew around the operation. The first courthouse and post office in Van Zandt County were located in Jordan's Saline...
